Implementing a Category Management Program is a natural follow on to an Opportunity Assessment, but it can be done on its own. The overall process results in a slate of projects with the accompanying spend, requirements, external market information and proposed strategy largely developed. The information can then be further refined by the assigned project teams.
Detailed Category Strategy packages are the ultimate output of a Category Management Program. The process is an excellent way for category leads to dive deep into their areas. This project lends itself to working sessions held over a period of months. This allows for ongoing work to be performed while research, analysis and discussions occur on the strategy packages. Once created, the packages become a roadmaps for future projects, easily refreshed every 2-3 years or when events shift the internal or external forces enough to impact the previous assumptions and resulting strategies.
Scope
Scope of Work for this project:
Engage with client’s procurement team to kick-off a Category Management Program through a series of group and individual working sessions. Create comprehensive packages that address the internal and external factors impacting the spend category, creates objectives and targets, identifies strategies, and synthesizes the information into a Prioritized Project Roadmap. The actual amount of time required to complete the program implementation depends of several factors, the most important being how much time can be allocated by the clients resources are able to invest into the analysis, research and strategy development – generally these programs stretch over several months due to other demands on the procurement resources.
Business Requirements:
- Client can provide source-able data (item level detail containing pricing, volumes, and descriptions which ties out to supplier payments.
- Stakeholders with knowledge of supplier spend and historic negotiations are accessible.
- Ability to schedule meetings/calls either directly via calendar visibility or through an intermediary with system access.
- Procurement resources exist who currently have oversight or could be assigned oversight for categories of spend.
- Procurement resources have intermediate experience using PowerPoint, Excel, and researching spend categories via open source and/or subscription services.
- Leadership is willing to support the necessary time investment required to complete the deep dive into the spend categories to create the Category Strategy Packages
